Announced at the CES in Las Vegas earlier this month, this decision by Volkswagen will have a big impact on how drivers interact with their vehicles by leveraging the latest developments in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance connectivity. Here’s how:
The advanced IDA voice assistant
The implementation of Cerence Chat Pro, an automotive-grade version of the popular ChatGPT technology, into Volkswagen vehicles will be made in conjunction with the IDA voice assistant found in MEB and MQB evo models such as the ID.4, ID.7, and the new Tiguan. This means that drivers will be able to use their voice to control vehicle systems such as navigation or climate control, but also to receive answers to general knowledge questions or to perform tasks unrelated to driving. Commands that pertain to a vehicle system will be managed by the on-board Volkswagen voice recognition system while anything that is outside of this technology’s scope will be forwarded to ChatGPT. This transition will be completely seamless to the users to create a more integrated experience.
Vehicle functions are given priority
While drivers and passengers will be able to perform an almost limitless list of actions with the help of ChatGPT in future Volkswagen vehicles, driving should always come first. This is why the system is designed to give priority to vehicle functions at all times, which means that even while the IDA Assistant is busy with a general request, a command to change the cabin temperature setting, for example, will be registered and acted upon immediately. This helps the driver keep their attention on the road and avoids frustrating situations where one has to wait for the system to finish its current task before it can begin a new one.
No personal data is exchanged
Some people might be apprehensive to hear that ChatGPT will be integrated into new Volkswagen vehicles, citing privacy concerns, but they shouldn’t worry. Indeed, Volkswagen’s commitment to protecting the personal data of its drivers means that no vehicle data is ever made available to the chatbot and that all questions and queries are deleted from the system immediately after having been answered. In addition, all questions sent to the AI are anonymized beforehand so that they can’t be traced back to a particular vehicle or user.
When will this technology be available?
Volkswagen will introduce ChatGPT to its vehicles built on the MEB and MQB evo platforms starting in the second quarter of 2024 in Europe. This means that European buyers of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, New Tiguan, New Golf and New Passat models will be able to experience its benefits by the start of summer. Volkswagen says it is still considering whether to include this new technology on models bound for North America, so we can expect further details soon.
