The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta engine is more economical despite higher horsepower

The new 2022 Volkswagen Jetta offers several improvements this year, but perhaps the most interesting thing is the reduced fuel consumption of its new engine.

The Jetta was the most powerful car in its class last year thanks to its turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produced 147 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. Torque remains the same in the Jetta's new 1.5-liter turbo engine this year, but power increases to 158 horsepower.

Best of all, fuel consumption is reduced thanks to a series of engine upgrades. Let's take a closer look.

High compression ratio

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta benefits from an 11.5 to 1 compression ratio, which is higher than the 10 to 1 compression ratio of the old Jetta. This means the Jetta uses every drop of fuel more efficiently.

Improved Miller Cycle

The Miller Cycle refers to the air in the engine, more specifically how the air circulates in the engine and the cycle has been improved for 2022 to provide better airflow.

More pressure

The Jetta’s turbo engine has a higher injection pressure which improves the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders while the turbocharger also offers more pressure.

Less friction

Thanks to optimized cylinders, the Jetta engine offers less friction, which means that the engine works less hard and fuel consumption is reduced.
